Covid-19: India logs 975 new cases, 4 deaths in 24 hours

New Delhi, April 16: India reported 975 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours with a daily case positivity rate of 0.32 percent, according to the data updated by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday. The weekly case positivity rate in India is recorded at 0.26 percent. Meanwhile, the active caseload in the country stands at 11,366, accounting for 0.03 percent of the total cases.

As many as 796 Covid patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries since the onset of the pandemic in India to 4,25,07,834, as per the update by the health ministry. With this, India's death toll has gone up to 5,21,747. As many as 3,00,918 samples were tested for Coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours. With this 83.14 crore tests have been conducted in the country since the beginning of the pandemic. Meanwhile, Paediatric pulmonologist at Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr Dhiren Gupta, on Friday called the shutting down of schools due to teachers and students contracting Covid-19 a "knee jerk" reaction and said people who were contracting infection have mild symptoms. "With the present trend, I feel it is a knee-jerk reaction. In the last two years, we have destroyed the younger generation as their mental and physical development is wasted. The real investment of a country is children. If they don't progress then after 10 years we will have weak personalities," added Dr Gupta.
