Congress presidential election: Polling concludes, results on Oct 19

New Delhi, October 17: Voting for the Congress presidential elections concluded on Monday, with delegates choosing between former union ministers Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor as the party's next head. In the election, over 9,000 Pradesh Congress Committee delegates were eligible to vote. Both Kharge and Tharoor campaigned ahead of the election, and Congress will elect a leader other than the Nehru-Gandhi family as president for the first time in 24 years. The new party chief will have his work cut out for him, with assembly elections already declared in Himachal Pradesh and poised to be held in Gujarat. The presidential election for Congress has taken place at the culmination of the party's organisational elections and has come at a time Congress faces multiple challenges. When asked about the election, Sonia Gandhi stated, "I have been waiting for a long time." Sonia Gandhi voted at the headquarters of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress general secretary, voted alongside her mother, Sonia Gandhi. The results will be declared on Wednesday, October 19.
