Days after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi named Charanjit Singh Channi as the CM face ahead of Punjab Assembly elections 2022, former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Sunil Jakhar on Friday said that Ambika Soni had objected to him becoming the Chief Minister.
While addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Sunil Jakhar lashed out at Ambika Soni. He said that Ambika had objected to him becoming the Chief Minister. "I had 40 MLAs in my favor, yet I was not made CM," he said.
"I am proud to be a Hindu and proud to be an Indian and even more proud to be a Punjabi," he said.
After the removal of Captain Amarinder Singh, Sunil Jakhar had expressed displeasure over not becoming the Chief Minister despite being the frontrunner in the race for CM face.
Jakhar said that he was not made CM on the opinion given to Rahul Gandhi by Ambika Soni who had said that CM should be Sikh face instead of Hindu. "Who is Ambika Soni...what does she know about Punjab," he said.
"I had said, that time, Ambika Soni backstabbed Punjab," he said.
After the announcement of Charanjit Singh Channi as the Chief Ministerial face of Congress for Punjab Assembly elections 2022, senior Congress leader Sunil Jakhar announced that he will not contest elections anymore, adding that, he will continue to be in association with Congress and will keep working for the party.
"I will not contest election...I am out of electoral politics...I have had a good inning, God has been grateful to me. I will work with Congress, will do whatever duty party assigns to me but I am out of electoral politics," he said.
Welcoming Rahul Gandhi's announcement to nominate Channi as the party's face for the assembly polls, Jakhar said, 'Giving chance to someone coming from a poor family is I believe one of the best decisions of Rahul Gandhi's political career."
