AAP’s Patiala Rural MLA Dr Balbir Singh convicted in criminal case; gets 3-year jail term
Ropar, May 23: Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Patiala (rural) Dr Balbir Singh and three others, including his wife and son, have been sentenced to 3-year rigorous imprisonment by additional chief judicial magistrate Ravi Inder Singh. However, all of them were granted bail on the spot on Monday. The AAP leader was convicted in an 11-year-old assault case. The complainant Paramjeet Kaur, sister of Dr Balbir Singh's wife Rupinder Kaur, stated that their father Anup Singh had divided his 109 bigha land in 1984 among three daughters, their mother and himself. She received 22 bighas of land from the division at Tapparian Dial Singh Be Charag village near Chamkaur Sahib, which was later usurped by Balbir Singh. However, on June 13, 2011; she and her husband Wing Commander Mewa Singh (retd) were watering the fields when Dr Balbir Singh, Rupinder Kaur, their son Rahul Saini and another person identified as Parminder Singh attacked them. Her husband was seriously injured in the attack, after which a case was registered against the accused under Sections 323, 324, 325, 506, 148 and 149 of IPC. Paramjeet Kaur also alleged that Balbir Singh has implicated them in a false case of assault on June 14, 2011. Advocate Bhupinder Singh Raja, representing Paramjeet Kaur stated that she and her husband Mewa Singh were acquitted in the case.
